Last week, the Largemouth team attended the 2012 InSpire Awards, hosted by the North Carolina Chapter of The Public Relations Society of America (NCPRSA) at the Capital City Club in downtown Raleigh. We were joined by members of The Pantry as the 2011 Kangaroo Express Salute Our Troops Campaign was named a finalist for integrated communications campaigns. As we anxiously awaited the results segment of the ceremony, NBC 17’s Valonda Calloway, host of My Carolina Today and emcee of the event, led us through an (appropriately) inspiring introduction.

Our campaign was contesting for a Silver InSpire Award, which highlighted campaigns as a whole. And we were in great company among some of the best PR agencies in our state! But our nervous smiles were soon assured with the news that Salute Our Troops was awarded a Silver Award of Excellence and named "Best in Category.”

We graciously accepted the first award, and although our smiles never faded, they did grow much larger as the overall top-scoring campaign was announced, and Salute Our Troops was honored by NCPRSA with the "Silver Best in Show" award for 2012! In my mind, the excitement of this top honor was only shadowed by the moment the $2.5 million Salute Our Troops donation check was revealed at last year’s campaign finale event.

I've had the good fortune to work for some pretty great companies; from locally owned TV stations, to NBC, to some great NC business leaders like Progress Energy and Blue Cross. A few years ago, I decided to step away from the high profile jobs and focus on public relations and media relations consulting. It was great; chose my clients, created my hours and had a lot of flexibility. But something seemed to be missing.

We take great pride in announcing that a public relations campaign that kept our team hustling all summer was recognized by the leading public relations trade publication, PRWeek, in a profile of the "Salute Our Troops" campaign.

Members of The USO Jeep Tour team pause and pose for a celebration photo at the Salute Our Troops campaign finale. The Jeep tour made stops across 8 states, traveling more than 13,500 miles and visiting more than 75 communities and 300 Kangaroo Express stores, recognizing local military heroes and providing a news peg that averaged more than three stories a day throughout the summer in local market media outlets.

During the course of my fall semester, I have spent roughly 40 business days as one of Largemouth's interns. As the semester is dwindling down and winter break is quickly approaching, I have had time to reflect about working in a full-service public relations firm for the past 16 weeks. From my time here, I can honestly say having an internship teaches you so much more than you will ever learn in the classroom. The experience I have gained thus far at Largemouth has undoubtedly been the most influential practice for my future in the public relations profession.

I recently joined Largemouth Communications as a project coordinator and could not be more excited about the opportunities this position has presented. Although I have only been here a few weeks, the amount of information I am learning on a daily basis can only be described as a young public relations professional's dream. (And no, no one is making me say this.)
