Kay Yow Cancer Fund Introduces Play 4Kay, Sets $1M Fundraising Goal

The Fund kicks off the 2011-2012 basketball season with a new brand and a new executive director

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Kay Yow Cancer Fund®, in partnership with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and The V Foundation for Cancer Research, today announced registration is open for the new 2012 Play 4Kay™ initiative.

Previously known as the WBCA Pink Zone, the Play 4Kay mission remains the same: a nation of coaches raising funds and breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund will continue to be the official charity of the initiative.

Play 4Kay events are already taking place at high schools, universities and communities across the nation, but the majority will occur February 10-20, 2012. Participants are asked to choose a game during this time to dedicate to breast cancer awareness and raise funds to support women's cancer research. In 2011, the fund raised more than $650,000. The fundraising goal for the 2012 Play 4Kay is set at $1 million.

This year the Kay Yow Cancer Fund launched www.Play4Kay.org with enhanced functionality to support participants' fundraising efforts, such as the "Friends Asking Friends" tool. Once participants register, the new website allows for each team to create a customized website for their specific event.

By creating individual webpages, participants will be able to accept online donations in support of the Kay Yow Cancer Fund for their specific team event, share details with friends and family via email and spread the word by taking advantage of the social media features. Event reports will allow participants to effectively track Play 4Kay goals and optimize fundraising efforts. The new registration system promises to elevate events to the next level.

Spearheading the revamped branding effort is former NCAA vice president and newly appointed Kay Yow Cancer Fund Executive Director Sue Donohoe.

"I have served on the Kay Yow Cancer Fund board of directors since its inception in 2007 and I am thrilled to join as the executive director during such an exciting time as we offer our supporters the tools necessary to make the Play 4Kay events even more successful than years past," said Donohoe. "The new Play 4Kay brand reminds us of Coach Yow's legacy and steadfast mission of promoting awareness and funding research for women's cancers."
